Dyson Institute of Engineering and Technology Case Study
Piloting Agile Online Course Design
Project Summary
The Dyson Institute of Engineering and Technology engaged Learning Design Solutions (LDS) to design a pilot online course. This course aimed to set a standard for effective online learning, targeting master’s-level and Continuing Professional Development (CPD) learners. The goal was to model an approach for the Dyson Institute that combined academic rigour with practical, accessible online delivery.
The Challenge
The Dyson Institute needed a pilot to showcase the feasibility of delivering high-quality, fully online learning for advanced-level courses. The course had to maintain the Institute’s high standards for academic content while also incorporating practical applications for immediate relevance. With a short project timeline, the pilot required an agile approach to course design, testing LDS’s ability to meet tight deadlines with a full-service delivery.
LDS Solution
LDS took a collaborative approach, working alongside the Dyson Institute’s subject matter experts to integrate their specialised knowledge with proven practices in online learning. To support the project, LDS provided project management, learning design, learning technologies, and multimedia production, including video editing and graphic design.
LDS developed a learner-centred course structure that met master’s-level expectations, integrating tools and platforms to support interactive learning. In line with their needs, LDS applied a rapid development model, demonstrating a replicable template for agile course planning, creation, and review.
Andrew Doig, LDS’ lead education consultant said, “The Inistitute team had such a high level of expertise in teaching and learning for their Dyson colleagues that it was critical that we could pilot online course creation that met their high expectations. Their commitment to course design came through in the hard work to meet the tight deadline, and the quality of the end product.”
Success Highlights
The pilot course in computer science was successfully delivered to a cohort of Dyson colleagues, providing an engaging and academically rigorous learning experience. The Institute now has a model for planning, creating, and refining online courses to support CPD and advanced learning initiatives. This project not only met the immediate needs of the Institute but also laid a foundation for scaling similar online programmes.
